After college and Sandhurst, Charles Thoroughgood has now joined the attack Commados and is on a four-month travel of responsibility in Armagh and Belfast. The thankless activity dealing with him and his males -- to patrol the tension-filled streets via weeks of boredom punctuated through bursts of horror -- takes them via occasions of tragedy, insanity, laughter and terror.

Alan Judd tells Thoroughgood's story with verve, compassion and humour. the result's a very tremendous novel which blends sour human incident with military farce.

At first, the colonial soldier, like his European counterpart, wore armor, carried a pike or a matchlock musket, and usually a sword. Neither the armor nor the pike was effective in fighting Indians in the rugged North American forests. The matchlock musket was superior to the Indian bow and arrow, but it was slow to load and often misfired, especially in inclement weather. Indians seldom stood and fought in massed formations, and militiamen found their weapons cumbersome in tracking tribesmen through the dense forests.

British counterattacks ended the debacle. Washington lost Philadelphia, as he had New York, and his army was still overmatched, but this time there was no Trenton or Princeton for consolation. Instead, Washington's men faced a miserable winter at Valley Forge while British soldiers enjoyed the comforts of Philadelphia. As for Howe, his victories had neither destroyed the rebel army nor roused loyalists to greater exertions. He himself came to believe that the war could not be won without an enormous military effort.
