They brought singular tastes and passions that guided the sights they saw and the destinations they pursued. The mathematician John Greaves traveled in the 1630s with his scientific instruments. He appreciated the historical context of the sights he saw, but he also liked to extract precise measurements.

As educational travel became more common, it domesticated a world beyond England’s shores. Travelers brought foreign experiences (and souvenirs) home, and as travel became normative they also conquered fears of BEFORE THE GRAND TOUR 19 the foreign. Travelers first knit England and Scotland into Europe through their adventures, and then took their experiences farther afield, connecting England to Asia and America literally in their voyages and also in the many manuscript and published accounts they generated about these new and unfamiliar worlds.
