When you see the filler getting thin over the high spot, stop sanding before the filler is completely sanded off the metal high spot. Next, I used a 5˝ Soft-Sander yellow pad and 80 grit to fine sand the filler. Each color Soft-Sander pad has a different contour. The blue pad is very flat; the yellow pad has a slight roundness, which makes it perfect for sanding this area. Now that it’s been sanded, the high spots are easy to see as they are peeking up through the filler. Don’t oversand. The rest of the quarter panel is sanded and areas that are difficult to sand with sandpaper are scuffed.

You want to sand just enough to have some factory E-coat left on the surface. This way, the high spots are sanded and the low spots still have paint on them. Here, a few ridges next the rear window are visible. These need to be filled. I spread Quantum 1 filler across the surface of this area. But note how I stay away from the seam where the quarter panel meets the rear deck. Do not fill this seam with filler or primer. If any filler gets in this seam, use a knife or tool to scrape it out. This seam will be filled with seam sealer later in the process, but for now, keep it clean and open.
